For the second question, while I agree that ontologies and reasoning stores are ultimately the right answer to this problem, in the short-term and small-scale, equivalent (modulo context) predicates can be handled in SPARQL using UNION or, if one predicate is preferred, using multiple OPTIONALs. I wrote about this second technique just the other day:
